Valentine’s Day is traditionally associated with

Valentine’s Day is traditionally associated with love and romance, but honestly, I’m not a huge fan of the holiday. It’s so commercialized and seems to encourage love shown by materialism instead of what love truly is. And there are so many forms of love: love you have for your partner, love that you have for your children, for your family, friends, pets, etc. Often, celebrating it in its commercialized way leaves people feeling the exact opposite way: lonely, yearning for that Hallmark movie love.

Instead, I look at it as a day to remind the world to love one another. To be kind. To show care and compassion for others. To teach our children how to love others, and themselves. To leave no one alone.

While I’ve always gotten our kids a little something for Valentine’s, it’s mainly tradition, as my parents did the same for me. But when I give it to them, I make sure to comment on why I chose the gift, what qualities about them that I love that made me think of them and purchase it. And to make them feel loved and special as kids.

But every other day, I teach them about how to show love in non-materialistic ways. Because Valentine’s is just a silly holiday, and love isn’t a bunch of roses and chocolate. It’s hard work, consideration, dedication, and kindness. It’s looking to help make a person’s day brighter by doing something kind. It’s lending an ear, giving a hug, writing a note, making a call. It’s looking for the beauty within. It’s looking for your beauty within and using that beauty to better the lives of others.

So I hope each and every one of you feels loved. Because you are. You add to this world in ways that you are aware of, and in other ways in which maybe you are not. But you do. And you’re beautiful and perfect just the way you are. Love yourself. You’re amazing. And have a wonderful day. 🩷

Question: What are some things that you can’t stand people judging others for?

It seems like everyone has their own opinions on how others should live their lives. From the big things, like gender-roles, higher education, childbearing, parenting styles, what healthy looks like, and marriage, down to the littler things like fashion, hobbies, and the number of followers you have on social media.

They can have their opinions—we can’t stop them. But we can stop letting those opinions bother us—and set clear boundaries for those toxic people in our lives. Because we deserve to be happy and live our lives accordingly. So stop listening, and start living! 🩷

If you’re anything like me, rest does not feel p

If you’re anything like me, rest does not feel productive. It feels, well, strange. Abnormal. Almost wrong. But really, how awful is it that we have been conditioned to associate adequate rest as many different things: laziness, procrastination, carelessness, neglecting responsibility, wasting time, and more.

Unquestionably, research has shown time and time again that rest is crucial to our body’s health, whether you are just finishing up a normal day or recovering from a recent surgery, as I am. In fact, rest is one of the most important and healthy things we can do for our bodies. One of the most important forms of self-care.

Take nature for example. Seasons exist for a reason here in New England, and right now we are in winter—the season of rest. Where there is a lack of greenery, colorful flowers, hibernating animals, shorter days. Many, including myself in years past, have found it difficult to find the beauty in winter. But, is winter supposed to be beautiful? Is rest beautiful? Not always. But knowing that the rest that nature is taking leads to new life and beauty during the other three seasons is beautiful—and something to learn from.

Our bodies have seasons. Daily seasons, where our winter is our sleeping hours. Where our winter is the time in which we recover from a surgery or childbirth. We have winters, and through that rest, no matter how hard it is to struggle through or slow down, comes new life, a new day, new energy.

Therefore, is rest productive? It very much is. So, be productive—prioritize rest. Prioritize you.

Phase 1 of our bedroom refresh is complete! It too

Phase 1 of our bedroom refresh is complete! It took months for me to decide what direction I wanted to go in, but overall, I wanted something light and airy with a little bit of color sprinkled in. (Yes, that’s color for me! 😂)

Even though I knew what I wanted it to look and feel like, I also chose pieces based on their functionality, as well.

For example, I love upholstered beds, but with two cats who like to stretch their claws, it wasn’t an option for it to be completely upholstered. So, a regular old metal bedframe that we attached an upholstered headboard was perfect.

Our previous nightstands lacked storage, and were teeny tiny. I chose wider ones with drawers to help with storage. And since the bump-out on my side of the bed basically didn’t allow for a proper lamp, sconces were my choice.

Overall, I am excited to paint the walls (the same colors they are) next month, hang my little gallery wall, and spruce up my vanity space with some paint.

Until then, this makes me so happy, and it will be a nice space to recover in!

I’m 36, and I’m getting a hysterectomy. I’m sure you’re wondering how I got here, and honestly, it’s been a long, tiring journey.

When I was younger, my periods were normal. Every 28th day. No bad cramping, no real PMS symptoms—aside from a chocolate craving and some sass. Then, I had my two beautiful boys.

After my second was born and my period returned, it was different—very, very different. It was heavy, irregular, and painful. For the first six months after it returned, I chalked it up to being postpartum, and my body healing and re-regulating.

*No, I chose not to use hormonal birth control at my six-week check-up. I’ve never been a fan of hormonal birth control as it never seemed to agree with me.*

After an additional six months passed, I was fed up. As a mom of two toddlers, I needed to function, so I decided to try hormonal birth control to help with regulation and flow. However, since I suffer from migraines, estrogen was off the table. Still, I tried various different other kinds, from the shot to progesterone-only pills to IUDs with no hormones. Instead of stopping my period or lessening the flow, I bled ALL THE TIME.

After two years of trying various kinds of hormone therapy, I quit. My body needed a break. And yet, the more time passed, the heavier, longer, and more irregular my cycles were. Long gone were Aunt Flo’s punctual 5-7 day visits. Now, she stayed between 9 and 14 now, and came every 23-33 days.

Due to the amount of blood I was losing, I have been consistently anemic for years. I couldn’t keep up during my pregnancies, but with my periods afterwards, I was really drowning. Supplements weren’t enough. I was constantly exhausted. I just had my first iron infusion on January 4. I thank God for my neurologist who referred me to hematology. We’ll circle back.

As a mom, squeezing in some self-care beauty time needs to be quick, easy, & effective! These are some of my favs that I can fit into a daily routine!

Under eye patches: I use them while I drink my coffee! Tip: keep them in the fridge for extra awakening!

Lip Mask: I hate chapped lips, and I throw this on before bed to prevent them!

Nail Strips: No UV light, quick to stick on, stays throughout ANYTHING (dishes, construction, you name it), and easy to peel off with no damage to your nails. Finally!

Wet brush: A necessity for longer hair. Easy to comb through and no damage done!

Scalp Massager: Yes please! I use it while shampooing! So many benefits and feels so good!

Tumbler: I won’t say hydration is key, because we already know it, okay?

Overall, 2023 has been the hardest year of my life

Overall, 2023 has been the hardest year of my life, by far. So here’s to the end of this chapter. This grief-ridden chapter, filled with uncomfortable change and moments of questioning every decision we made. It is easy to develop tunnel vision when life is tough, but it’s important to remember that everyday has something good in it. At least one thing. A sip of a well-made coffee, a breathtaking view of the sunset, belly laughs from your children, much-needed warm hugs that emanate love, the smell of a freshly bloomed flower. And after 365 days, those little things add up, fill you up.

While 2022 was difficult for me mentally, I decided to commit to a week-long intensive therapy program, and afterwards I continued my regular weekly therapy appointments that I’ve been doing for years. Through it all, I learned to overcome past trauma, prioritize my needs, set healthy boundaries, and continue to work on the tools that get me through difficult times without falling into a deep depression. I’ve never been more thankful for my ability to seek the health I need, because I truly believe the tools I learned kept me afloat this year.

My hopes for 2024 is to get back to living more freely. Spending even more time with loved ones. Painting more, writing more. Being more present, more mindful. Completing a couple DIYs, including our bedroom, but moreso enjoying those we have already done.

I’m at a standstill with this space, and I’m unsure what my purpose here is, but maybe I’ll figure it out one day. Or maybe I just did. Anyways, until next year, folks! ✌🏻 Here are some of my favorite memories of 2023!

Some fun facts about Gift Wrapping Meghan:

1. I love wrapping presents…until I reach about gift 15. Then I hate-love it.
2. I am obsessed with ribbon. I prefer it to bows. And I mean real ribbon.
3. The print and color scheme on my wrapping paper is very important to me. But this year, I let the kids pick. I’m a Capricorn. That stuff is hard for me, okay?
4. I don’t like the color red. I try so hard. Pink is my color, even for Christmas. (But pink is just white mixed with red, so that counts, right? And is pretty ironic.)
5. I love The Nutcracker ballet, and if I could have it as a theme for everything during Christmastime, I would. Especially for wrapping paper.
6. Glitter wrapping paper is a big NO for me. It’s gorgeous, but man, I vacuum enough.
7. If I’m wrapping a gift box, everything inside of it is going to be made to look pretty too. With ribbon, of course.
8. I like to add greenery or bells to the front of my gifts.
9. I don’t believe that any wrapped present is ugly. We all have our own ways of wrapping, and it’s really not about the aesthetic. It’s about the thought and time.
10. I like to stock up for the next year right after the holiday! Love me some clearance!

Gifting is one of my love languages, so I love this time of year. Just picking out little things that I think will bring those I love joy or feel special is something I love to do. It’s never anything crazy, but I like to get each family member a little box of tiny things that made me think of them. However, I know this season it isn’t just about the gifts. Just being together is what fills my heart the most.

And here I am, off to wrap! (Well this was a—what’s the word, shallow, maybe—post, huh? Well, let’s go with it.)

My children love their elf, Sprinkles, and I do too! I know it can seem like a burden at times, and I’ve already popped out of bed early one morning to quickly move her, but seeing the excitement in the kids’ eyes when they find her is worth it.

Today, we decorated our porch and front yard for Halloween! It was a fun, family activity, and while we can’t get super spooky yet, as we have little kids, I think it’s cute. It’s not much, but it’s just enough. You can’t see it here, but we also hung lights that can fit Halloween AND Christmas. I’ll show you when it’s dark out. Oh, we also finally hung the shutters I bought a year ago. 😂 I think they add a lot to the house.

🍎 Apple Picking 🍎

Today, we went to a local orchard, took a wagon ride, and picked about 30 pounds of apples! I guess I’ll be making apple crisp, apple pie, apple sauce, apple you-name-it!

The kids had a blast, and Ben decided that the apples there were much better than the ones at the store—just like anything we grew in our garden this year. He has good taste. 😉

Owen couldn’t wait to get back and see the goats and play on the playground! (How cute is this goat? He just stuck around for the love he was getting from us! The line was too long to get food from the farm store.)

In the last picture, Ben is climbing up to go down the slide, and Owen was already at the top, so Owen put his little hand out to help him and melted our hearts. 🥹

They were so tired tonight that they skipped story time, rolled over, and fell right to sleep! They both looked exhausted by dinner.

🍎For us, it’s Honeycrisp to eat and Cortland to bake! Unfortunately, cortland were all picked out, so we went with Honeycrisp and Gala (snacking) and Macoun (baking).

I love seeing the homes here on Instagram all decked out for Fall and Halloween (give me all the spooky vibes!), but I’ve personally become more of a minimal holiday decorator over the years. Something about the extra decorating at this point in my life stresses me out! Plus, as soon as I turn around, it’s time to put it all away!

This year, to help me cut down on the bins I have stored in the cellar, I chose my very favorite things and chose just a couple places in our home to display them! The places I chose are our dining table centerpiece, our kitchen shelves, my desk, our fireplace mantle, our living room shelves, and the playroom.

My Benny. He’s six! How has the time flown so quickly?! While it’s always bittersweet when my kids’ birthdays come, as I want them to stay little forever, but love to watch them grow, I am so proud of the little person my first baby is becoming. (Both of my babies! But, this post is about Ben.)

Ben, my independent, caring little boy who loves to sit and have deep conversations, is always making us laugh with his wit, and always has a smile on his face.

Ben, the animal lover who makes sure to say good morning and goodnight to each indoor pet, who always wait impatiently for their one-on-one time with him each day. And the chickens and ducks who enjoy his presence.

Ben, the best big brother there ever was to our Owen, who adores and looks up to Ben with eyes filled with love.

👟 DIY Shoe Rack! 👟

Scrap wood & paint that matches my kitchen cabinets, and now we have a ✨functional✨ shoe rack that can hold our everyday shoes of every season! Lately, I’ve been so tired of searching for something to find that it is: a) cheaply made and ends up in the trash within a year or two, b) doesn’t really exist for the space I need, or c) is wildly expensive. So, I’ve started to make my own. I’ve found that between the time from click to deliver, I can usually whip up something myself that meets all of my requirements and fits the aesthetic of my home.

I’m so happy with the end product, and that my kids are actually putting their own shoes on it! 😂 Since we are a no-shoes household, this item is a must. Where do you keep your everyday shoes?
