Making a Statement
Boldly-colored painted furniture makes for a wonderful statement piece, in any style home. Just recently, I tried it out myself, and while I my style is more neutral and monochromatic, my kids love color! So, to tie in his love of firetrucks and ambulances, I decided to paint a dresser red to accent my son’s black, white, and light blue room.
Red is such an interesting color to work with. It can easily pull more pink or orange, depending on the undertones in the specific color. I was looking for more of a true red, and in the end, “Heirloom Red” by Valspar did not disappoint.
Now, there are a million and one tutorials about how to paint dressers on Pinterest, and I definitely suggest reading some before you do it yourself. You never know—there’s always a tip or trick in there that might really help improve the outcome of your project.
My Take on Cabinet and Furniture Paint
Now, this isn’t my first, or fifteenth, time painting a piece of furniture. However, it was my first time using actual cabinet and furniture paint. The paint associate at Lowe’s recommended it, and I thought I would give it a shot. While there were a few nervous moments along the way, the associate was right. That’s the way to go.
When you are used to regular wall paint, cabinet and furniture paint may make your inner painting instincts second guess themselves at first. For example, when I first began painting the dresser, I noticed the paint didn’t seem to be going on as smoothly as I was used to. I was painting smoothly and evenly, and it was covering, but something seemed different. Maybe streaky. I set my brush down and waited for the coat to dry. I noticed that when dry, it really looked flawless. The process of drying made me super nervous, as it didn’t seem to dry evenly, or all at the same time, so some spots were the light color of the wet paint, mixed in with the darker color of the dry paint.
After three even coats, the bureau looked exactly as I envisioned. It was a nice red, and the paint was more durable than regular wall paint. The paint covered nicely, evenly, and the satin sheen was perfect. Overall, I recommend using Valspar’s Cabinet and Furniture Paint (and painting a statement piece of furniture a nice, bold color.)
